8 Tips For Hiring A Divorce Lawyer
1. Ask your friends for referrals.
Many attorneys make a living off of referrals, which is a great thing for clients! This may seem like a no-brainer, but I think many people do not ask for recommendations due to the sensitive nature of a divorce. Getting a divorce is not something you should be ashamed of. Also, you do not have to disclose all your personal problems.
2. Consult with multiple attorneys.
Do not go with the first attorney you consult with. You want to make certain you are compatible, comfortable, and you can trust your attorney. They are going to be handling some of your deepest secrets, and you will be working with them for months or even years. You do not want to have to find a new attorney in the middle of your case. I always encourage clients to consult with other attorneys before signing with me.
3. Know what you want your divorce process to be like.
Do not hire a shark attorney (as they can make the case contentious), unless that is your game plan. Make it known to your attorney how you want to approach your case. Now, if the other spouse has a shark attorney, you might need one yourself!
4. Find someone you can afford.
Ask about all the fees involved! Divorces can be expensive, so approach with a cost-benefit analysis.
5. Higher price does not equal better attorney.
6. Take lawyer ratings with a grain of salt.
Some states have professional rules of advertising and ethics that prohibit attorneys from participating on legal rating websites. Also, people going through divorces are not happy. A lawyer could be outstanding for a client, and they will still complain.
7. Be wary of advertisements.
Advertisements are not a bad thing, but just because a firm or lawyer is plastered on every billboard, it does not make them “the best.” Advertisements sell a business. It is not a track record.
8. Hire a family law attorney.
Family law is a complex arena. You want a competent attorney to represent you. You would not go to a podiatrist to get your nose fixed.
